God created man in His image. This means many things. But we know, as Chassidus teaches, the Kingdom of earth reflects the kingdom of Heaven. The fact that we have a desire to connect and marry, is because God has the same desire albeit in a somewhat different way. He created us, the Jewish nation, to be His wife. Does God really desire companionship? Well, He certainly did not need anyone, as He existed alone before the world was ever created. But He wanted to be able to give. He created people and actually an entire world and universe in order to give. And the fact that God wants to give is what implanted within us the desire to give as well. Any good traits we have are because we are a reflection of God. We are to emulate His ways.
The world post Adam and Eve’s sin in the garden of Eden is now a world where good and evil are intermingled and sometimes it is hard to separate light from darkness. But that is the task of each and every one of us : to separate good from evil. To change darkness to light. To emulate our Creator and keep ourselves focused on truth and what is right and bring satisfaction to God.
If we ever find ourselves in a dark or confused place, it helps very much to think that when God created the world, He made everything clear and simple. Humankind has confused things. That is why God gave us His Torah: to keep us on the right path and to know what is right, what is wrong, what is truth and what is falseness. If we connect to truth, we will always connect to God properly.
By always trying to think what God would want us to do under any circumstance in life, we are able to make the world a better place, a holier place, and a place which gives its Creator delight and happiness. After all, it is His world. We are just the players in it. We certainly should try to please our Father in Heaven. That is why children always want approval from their parents. God implanted that in creation, into the hearts of human beings, because this is the kind of relationship we should have with Him as well.
